About our Guest Speaker:
Alison Lundergan Grimes,
Kentucky Secretary of State, 2012 – present
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is Kentucky's 76th Secretary of State and only elected female Constitutional Officer.
In 2011, Secretary Grimes left her successful law practice to dedicate herself full time to serving the citizens of Kentucky. From the start of her campaign, Secretary Grimes vowed to ensure Kentucky truly is open for business and to preserve and protect all eligible Kentuckians’ access to the ballot box.
As Secretary of State, Grimes has expanded the Kentucky Business One Stop Portal, modernized and streamlined Kentucky’s laws and processes to help businesses interact with government more efficiently, and encouraged more civic action and engagement across the Commonwealth.
Grimes has also worked to improve election administration to better protect the right to vote for all Kentuckians, especially military voters and voters with disabilities.
Grimes’ professional involvement includes volunteering her time and energy to such organizations as the Salvation Army, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and God’s Pantry Food Bank, where she serves on the Board of Directors.
Before being elected as Secretary of State, Grimes was a business litigator and provided pro bono legal services to victims of domestic violence. She also served for two years as the president of the Fayette County Bar Association’s Women Lawyers’ Association, leading the group’s efforts to advance women in the community at large, support the legal rights of all women and promote equal opportunity for all.
Grimes is a native of Maysville, Kentucky. She received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, where she served as a trustee to the Board of Directors. Grimes obtained her law degree, graduating with honors, from American University, Washington College of Law, in Washington, D.C.
